Combined old gel plate prints
Gulfsprite challenged us last week to paint a girl that needed adjustment. The base was done in acrylic paint, but all of the adjusting was in colored pencils. I have a big set of Prisma, hardly ever use them. So I painted a girl I had drawn and left in graphite in one of the journals, let it dry overnight, then sat on the couch the other day with the pencils. I learned something: to burnish the color, you really have to press and go over the area again and again. This technique is not friendly to old hands. Both of my hands were sore within an hour, and my right hand was still tender the next day. I will not be using the pencils again in that manner. But one good point emerged from this experiment. That girls hair looks wavy and curly. I did that with a flat brush, going down from the crown of the head in a very loose manner. Works for me.

I ripped the Prada ad from a fashion magazine months ago, wanting to do something with that face. The circle has mostly Arteza brush markers, which is also on her face. There is some acrylic, used the Uniball pen to write the exploding brain quip.

Last night was a free live stream on YouTube with Christy. Those of us who are on Patreon with her knew to prep pages with a heavy layer of gesso and make some texture in the gesso. This is all acrylic, and this concept was to keep adding layers until you came to what you wanted. She has blue underneath the flesh tones for shading, and I am happy with the fact I did NOT use any pens on any part of this face. Very loose because I also made myself use a long handled brush and hold it at the very end. I really enjoyed doing this one. As Christy would say, perfectly imperfect.

The glue book is fast and fun, and mindless. I just go. All of my random gel prints, tissue, deli papers are in those 12x12 containers, and I just take one off the shelf and rummage, grab stuff, and cut it up to glue. Helping me to relax. It's almost like meditation. I am more than half way through this book, and will start another after this. It's a nice break from drawing and/or painting.
Stay safe. Wash your hands. Smile.
