Daniel Smith watercolors has a neat neutral called Shadow Violet. It's kind of violet, but faint. That is what I used to shade the face on the left, and in the neck. I really like the softness you can achieve with this color.

I bought a pad of black and white pattern scrapbook paper at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby on sale months ago. Pushed it into the cabinet behind the desk and promptly forgot about it. While I was looking for something else the other day, found that pad and had an "Ah Ha!" moment.  The black and white page opposite the girls is partially that paper, with some stenciling in black and white. Moving on....
