All of the instructors I have been following suggest taking pics of your work in progress. Good idea! |

New online class from soaphousemama at the purplemailbox.com website. The link is in the blog links to the right. Ashli's classes are very affordable and always a lot of fun. The name of the current class is Colorplay. The first lesson was to choose one color to use, and adding only black, white, and grey, create highlights and shadows. I followed Ashli's example and used Liquitex Basic acrylics, and struggled with the paint. Haven't painted with any acrylic paint in several months, due to taking the monthly gulfsprite lessons, link also to the right. So the blue and grey girl turned out better than I had hoped it would, simply because the medium was not moving around like I wanted it to. Well, duh! I am now too used to watercolors and gouache.
One of the tricks you learn is to cover or blend with gesso, and I did a bunch of that on this journal spread. I am happy with it, because I accomplished what I intended.
For the second lesson, we were using black and white, and only one color to draw the eye into the girl as a focal point. Ashli used a green. I grabbed my gouache and used this brilliant orange, forgetting because I am an idiot, that any gesso over the gouache would reactivate it. I had a very dark grey flower for a bit, until the first layer of gesso dried where I could then trust the black gouache to stay put.
The orange girl was drawn over the dry gouache. I did add gesso for highlights and some black Pilot pen lines, but basically left the pencil drawing as is. I should probably spray this with a light mist of Krylon to set the pencil, but I am loving this effect. And yeah, I will do this again.
Posting my lessons on Instagram. Follow along!
